Grey-headed Swamphen

Porphyrio poliocephalus

The bird is a Grey-headed Swamphen (Porphyrio poliocephalus), locally called Kalem or Kora. This large rail features striking purplish-blue and turquoise plumage, exceptionally long pinkish legs, and a heavy red bill with a prominent frontal shield. In Bangladesh, this species is a common resident found wading through freshwater wetlands, marshes, rivers, haors, and dense reed beds nationwide.
