The Black-shouldered Kite (Elanus axillaris) is a small, striking bird of prey native mainly to Australia, known for its distinctive black wing patches and bright red eyes. Appearance: Striking pale grey and white plumage, black patches over its wing joints ("shoulders"), a white tail, and dark red eyes surrounded by black eye-patches. Hovering Flight: Excellent at hovering stationary in mid-air over grasslands and paddocks while scanning the ground below for prey. Diet: Feeds primarily on rodents (especially mice), small mammals, lizards, and large insects, diving rapidly once a target is spotted. Habitat: Prefers open country, farmlands, grasslands, and grassy woodlands where hunting is easy.
