Brahminy Kite

Haliastur indus

The bird is a Brahminy Kite (Haliastur indus), locally called Shonkhachil. This striking medium-sized raptor is easily distinguished by its contrasting chestnut plumage and contrasting white head and breast with fine dark streaks. In Bangladesh, it is a common resident bird frequently seen soaring near rivers, coastal areas, wetlands, haors, and fish ponds nationwide.
